По мотивам одноименного романа Николая Чергинца. Действие фильма начинается весной 1941 года и завершается первыми месяцами после освобождения Беларуси. В центре сюжета фильма – история трех братьев Купревичей. Лейтенант милиции Алексей Купревич получает назначение оперуполномоченным в один из районов Западной Беларуси. Его задача – обезвредить бесчинствующую там банду "лесных братьев". Начинается война. Алексей и его брат, старший лейтенант милиции Петр Купревич, получают первое боевое задание: уничтожить высадившийся под Селищами немецкий десант...
